The Potter's House of Clay mission is to provide transition housing for women, children and families to mitigate risk of working homeless citizens in the Hampton Roads Community. The House provides shelter for families and, land that will allow them to till the earth to plant a garden. The organically grown vegetables and herbs will serve help to educate youth and parents to form patterns of healthy nutritional intake. The grounds also provide a small play area for children to promote a healthy lifestyle. Families may live there for up to 18 months to enhance the preparation for transitioning into their own home/apartment. The Potter's House of Clay will also provide support services to women, children, and families in need that will allow them to live independently.
Our counseling services assist families, women and children to understand and cope with situations and events that cause distress and challenge their ability to be healthy and well. Our goal is to help our clients develop economically sufficient lifestyles, spirit, soul and body to enable them to achieve their goals. In addition to providing counseling services to the children, we inform parents of their rights under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which allows children to remain at their home school for the remainder of the academic year if there is residential instability. Schools are supposed to provide transportation for these children, and we help parents work with a school liaison to ensure that happens. The Potter's House of Clay is designed to help working families learn valuable life skills to improve and sustain their individual family and the community at large.
